Umbraco 13 end of life - why businesses should be planning their next move now

Most businesses don’t upgrade their CMS because they want to, they upgrade because eventually the platform becomes harder to live with than it should be.

That’s the situation many organisations are now approaching with Umbraco 13, which reaches End of Life on December 14, 2026.

That doesn’t mean your website suddenly stops working the next day. But it does mean the platform stops receiving security updates, bug fixes, and long-term support from Umbraco. Over time, that creates increasing risk, not just technically, but operationally too.

And in reality, the bigger problem is usually the slow build-up of friction from integrations becoming harder to maintain. Hosting requirements change which means workarounds pile up, editors get frustrated and the development costs creep upwards.

Eventually, even small changes start taking longer than they should.

For many businesses, that’s the real trigger for reviewing their platform roadmap.

Why more businesses are looking at Umbraco 17

A lot of the conversation around Umbraco 17 focuses on features, but for me, Umbraco 17 is less about shiny new features and more about maturity, platform stability, and modern architecture.

That’s why many businesses are targeting it as their next long-term platform version.

Umbraco 17 is an LTS (Long-Term Support) release, which means:

  • Longer support windows
  • Fewer forced upgrades
  • More platform stability
  • Less disruption over time

For businesses managing large websites or complex digital estates, that matters far more than having the latest trend-led features.

Remaining on LTS is really beneficial for clients. It means fewer forced upgrades, longer support windows, and more confidence in long-term planning.

The bigger shift is happening under the hood

One of the biggest changes in recent Umbraco releases has been the move away from the older AngularJS-based back office.

Historically, heavily customised Umbraco builds could become difficult to maintain over time. Every workaround or custom extension increased upgrade complexity later down the line.

Umbraco 17 completes the transition to a more modern, component-based architecture.

In practical terms, that means:

  • Cleaner upgrade paths
  • More stable customisations
  • Easier maintenance
  • Better long-term scalability

And importantly, the ecosystem around it has now matured properly.

The “new back office” introduced a few versions ago is no longer new or experimental. It’s mature, polished, and ready for long-term adoption.

Better for developers usually means  better for marketing teams too

A lot of CMS conversations focus heavily on technical architecture, but the impact is often felt most by marketing and content teams.

Modern platforms should make everyday tasks easier:

  • Quicker editing
  • Cleaner workflows
  • Less dependency on developers
  • Fewer platform limitations

Umbraco 17’s newer architecture is designed around that flexibility.

The updated extension model also makes custom functionality far more upgrade-safe than it used to be.

That means businesses can continue evolving their platform without constantly worrying about breaking future upgrades.

The API improvements matter more than they sound

One of the more significant improvements in Umbraco 17 is the Management API.

Historically, Umbraco integrations could feel inconsistent. Some actions worked through APIs, others only through the UI, which made automation harder than it needed to be.

Now, the approach is much cleaner. If you can do it in the UI, you can do it via the API.

For businesses, that opens the door to:

  • Cleaner integrations
  • Easier automation
  • More scalable content operations
  • Stronger headless and composable setups

That becomes increasingly important as websites connect into wider business systems and digital ecosystems.

So, upgrade or rebuild?

Well that depends on the platform.

Not every Umbraco 13 website needs the same approach.

For some businesses, a structured upgrade path to Umbraco 17 is the right move.

And, for others, especially where there’s years of technical debt or heavily customised functionality, a rebuild can sometimes be the smarter long-term option.

The important thing is starting early enough to make that decision properly.

The businesses that struggle most with platform upgrades are usually the ones forced into rushed timelines.

Starting earlier gives teams time to properly assess:

  • Architecture
  • Integrations
  • Editor workflows
  • Performance issues
  • Future business requirements

That usually leads to better decisions and far less disruption.

FINAL thoughts

Umbraco 13 reaching End of Life isn’t a reason to panic. But it is a good reason to start planning.

The earlier businesses assess their upgrade path, the more control they have over timelines, costs, and long-term platform decisions.

And increasingly, Umbraco 17 is becoming the version many organisations see as the stable long-term foundation for the next phase of their digital platform.
